Pat Byrne is a legendary figure in Irish aviation, best known as the founder of CityJet. His appearance on Aran Island Discs (March 2026) offers a deep dive into a career defined by high-stakes entrepreneurship, international expansion, and a relentless "never say die" attitude.

Professional Career: The CityJet Journey

Pat Byrne’s career spans over 50 years, but he is most synonymous with the airline he built from the ground up.

  • Foundation (1992-1993): After a successful early career in finance and insurance (founding what became Cornmarket Group), Byrne launched CityJet to pioneer routes between Dublin and the then-underutilized London City Airport.

  • The Virgin & Air France Eras: He famously secured a franchise deal with Richard Branson to operate as "Virgin CityJet." The airline was later sold to Air France in 2000, and Byrne stepped away for a period to focus on other ventures, including the airline software company Rainmaker.

  • The "Second Tour": In a rare move for a founder, Byrne returned to CityJet in 2015. He led a consortium to buy the airline back from German owners and pivoted the business model toward "wet leasing" (operating flights on behalf of other major airlines like SAS and Brussels Airlines).

  • Legacy: He is widely credited with saving the airline during the pandemic through a successful examinership process, ensuring its survival as a key player in European regional aviation.

The Aran Island Discs Episode

In his interview with Rossa McDermott, Pat moves past the balance sheets to discuss the personal cost and drive behind his success.

  • The "Rugged" Entrepreneur: Pat describes his business journey as a series of "Atlantic storms," making the Aran Island setting a perfect metaphor for his career.

  • Music & Influence: He explores a diverse taste in music that reflects his global travels, but emphasizes his identity as a "family-focused" man from Bray.

  • Rugby Connections: He also discusses the pride and unique pressure of being the father of professional rugby players Ross and Harry Byrne (both of whom play for Leinster and Ireland), often finding himself watching his sons compete for the same starting jersey.

Current Ventures

Pat recently stepped back from the day-to-day CEO role at CityJet (transitioning to Executive Chairman) to launch After-Byrne Strategic, a consultancy where he mentors the next generation of Irish leaders on strategy and "critical thinking under fire."
